The £73m Manchester United paid Borussia Dortmund for Sancho back in 2021 never came close to being repaid in output — just 12 goals from 83 appearances across a five-year stay punctuated by loan spells at Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa — and his time at Old Trafford finally ran its course when his contract lapsed at the end of June. He was one of several players let go as free agents that day, with Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia also shown the door.
Now searching for his next move, Sancho has turned to Flixton, a tenth-tier club in Greater Manchester, to stay sharp through solo training sessions. Its assistant manager, Rhodri Giggs, happens to be the brother of United great Ryan Giggs.
Footage the club shared online of the 26-year-old admiring the pitch was enough to set off half-serious chatter about a possible drop into non-league football.
"You've got a nice layout here," Sancho said in the clip. "It's my first time around this area, and it's the first time I've seen a nice pitch [in this area] apart from United and City."
Flixton moved quickly to dampen the speculation.
In a statement, club owner Christopher Garcia said: "Over the past few days, we've seen a number of posts and comments circulating regarding Jadon Sancho's visit to Flixton FC. To clarify, Jadon was not on trial with the club and was not involved in any transfer discussions.
"He simply used our facilities for a private training session to maintain his fitness while preparing for the next chapter of his career. We're proud that the quality of our pitch and facilities made Flixton a place where a player of his calibre felt comfortable training, and he is welcome to train at Flixton FC whenever he wishes."
Garcia also used the statement to push back against criticism the club felt Sancho had received.
"During his visit, Jadon was nothing but professional, humble, and generous with his time. After completing his session, he happily met with young supporters, posed for photos, signed autographs, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him," he said.
"Jadon is a world-class footballer who has achieved more in the game than most players could ever dream of. He deserves respect for both his accomplishments and the way he conducted himself during his visit, not the unwarranted criticism that has followed. We thank Jadon for choosing Flixton FC as a place to train and wish him every success in the next stage of his career, which will undoubtedly be at a level far above where we currently compete. Our doors will always be open to him."
Concrete transfer interest in Sancho has been sparse so far, with Qatari club Al-Rayyan among the few sides to have made an enquiry. The winger is understood to be open to a move to the Middle East, including a possible switch to the Saudi Pro League, though he has not ruled out remaining in Europe should the right offer arrive before the window closes.
