Real Madrid have triggered their buy-back clause to re-sign forward Angel Carvajal from Valladolid, as four senior Castilla players prepare to leave this summer.

Real Madrid have triggered the buy-back clause on forward Carvajal, bringing him back from Real Valladolid in a move that mirrors, in reverse, the situation of another player heading the opposite way, even as the club's Castilla side braces for a summer of major departures among its senior figures.

Real Madrid informed Valladolid of their decision to exercise the buy-back option over Carvajal's registration rights, a clause the club systematically inserts into the transfer deals of its academy graduates. The 22-year-old had joined Valladolid last summer on a contract until June 2028, but returns to the club that formed him after an excellent campaign with the Castilian side's reserve team, in which he scored 20 goals in Segunda Federacion, including two hat-tricks and a run of four consecutive matches on the scoresheet.

His form even earned him a first-team call-up late in the season amid injuries to Marcos Andre and Ohio. Born in Madrid on March 19 2004, Carvajal began at Santa Ana before joining Real Madrid's Juvenil B in 2021-22, spent the following season on loan at Rayo Alcobendas, where he scored 24 goals, and made two appearances for Castilla before his move to Valladolid.

The operation has a direct parallel in the case of Adrian Arnuncio, the Palencia-born forward Real Madrid brought to Castilla on loan with an option to buy from Valladolid last winter. Real Madrid will not exercise the โ‚ฌ1million option they held over Arnuncio, meaning the Under-19 international, regarded as one of the standout talents of the 2007 generation, will return to Valladolid, the club that developed him from childhood and with whom he made his Segunda Division debut.

The comings and goings around Carvajal and Arnuncio come as Castilla braces for a broader shake-up. Four of the reserve side's most senior figures, all effectively certain to leave this summer, are moving on: Fran Gonzalez, David Jimenez, Manuel Angel and Palacios, all of whom have also captained the side.

Fran Gonzalez, who recently switched agencies to Stellar, has just turned 21 and faces no route into the first team with Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin both staying on, meaning his choice is between another season as third-choice goalkeeper or a fresh start elsewhere; the club is leaning towards a straight loan rather than selling half his rights, with Youth League hero Javi Navarro set to become Castilla's first-choice goalkeeper.

David Jimenez, 22, has seen his path blocked following the signing of Denzel Dumfries, and is expected to leave via a transfer that would still see Real Madrid retain 50 per cent of his rights, with Fortea in line to inherit the Castilla right-back spot should he also stay.

Manuel Angel, nicknamed Mami and the current Castilla captain, is the most advanced case of the four: a move to Deportivo La Coruna is already being discussed, again under the 50 per cent sale formula, after Real Madrid rejected a strong offer from Leganes for him last summer.

Palacios, meanwhile, will at least get a chance to impress during pre-season with the first team at Jose Mourinho's request, though with no realistic space available, a departure remains the likely outcome; he has interest from several Premier League clubs and, like Fran Gonzalez, has recently changed representation, this time to Best of You.

With four long-serving captains preparing to leave, Real Madrid's academy sets up for what looks like a genuine changing of the guard, with players such as Joan Martinez, Mario Rivas, Mesonero, Ciria and Rachad expected to step into more prominent roles at Valdebebas next season.
