Club officials want the new deal to reflect how much Guler has come to contribute since arriving from Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023, along with his continued development in recent months, and to secure his long-term future with an improved contract to match his current standing in the squad. The financial and contractual upgrade is already in motion.
The plan already under way is to sign a new deal running until 2031, including a salary rise that puts Guler where his performance and commitment to the club merit. There is full agreement between the parties, and the new terms are expected to take effect from the start of this season.
The former Fenerbahce player arrived in 2023 at just 18 years old and has since become close to indispensable in Mourinho's plans, with the head coach favouring the Turk further forward rather than in a deeper midfield role — a position more often reserved for players such as Bernardo Silva, Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga or Aurelien Tchouameni.
When he joined Real Madrid, Guler signed a contract running to June 30, 2029, but the club's aim with this move is to remove any doubt and formally recognise that his importance to the team is no longer that of the 18-year-old who arrived with a reputation to live up to and who initially struggled to adapt to the demands of a club at Real Madrid's level.
His progress has gradually elevated him into an important role, both last season and at the start of this campaign, with Mourinho viewing the attacking midfielder as a player capable of making the difference close to the opposition's goal, a view he has relayed directly to the club's hierarchy. There is complete satisfaction with his work rate, performances and commitment.
His numbers from last season leave little room for doubt: 51 appearances, six goals and 14 assists. In the opening month of this campaign he has already played all four league matches — he was suspended for the Champions League opener — contributing a goal and an assist.
Fenerbahce retain a 20 per cent sell-on clause from the original 2023 transfer, meaning the Istanbul club would be entitled to a fifth of any profit should Real Madrid ever sell Guler above the fee they paid for him.
Extending his contract to 2031 would also raise the cost of prising him away for any interested rival; Arsenal were among the clubs to make contact with his camp earlier this year, though no formal approach followed.
