Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended from the Portugal national team after the Portuguese Football Federation opened disciplinary proceedings following his departure from the squad before the match against Denmark.

The federation confirmed the decision in an official statement, explaining that a disciplinary investigation had been launched to establish whether events reported on 7 October warranted further action.

The proceedings were formally initiated on 9 October by the federation’s non-professional section. Ronaldo’s suspension is preventive rather than a final punishment, and the case has been designated urgent.

The federation said: “The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was decided by the non-professional section on 9 October 2026, with the aim of investigating whether the events reported on 7 October have disciplinary relevance.”

It added that, following the automatic preventive suspension that had applied until the case was opened, a further non-automatic preventive suspension had been imposed.

“The case was declared urgent,” the statement said.

The decision follows a period of tension surrounding the Portugal captain. Ronaldo left the national team camp before the fixture against Denmark and subsequently made public comments alleging that head coach Jorge Jesus had broken the trust between them.

The precise circumstances and disciplinary implications of the incident will now be examined through the federation’s process. No final sanction has been announced, and the preventive suspension should not be confused with a completed disciplinary ruling.

The case is particularly significant given Ronaldo’s status as one of Portugal’s most recognisable players and the captain of the national team. Any extended suspension could affect the team’s plans for upcoming international fixtures, depending on the outcome of the investigation and any subsequent decision by the federation.

Portugal’s next scheduled match is against Denmark on 14 November in the Nations League. Whether Ronaldo will be available for that game will depend on how the disciplinary process develops.

The federation has indicated that the investigation will proceed urgently, but it has not publicly detailed the evidence being considered or specified what punishment could follow if a breach is established.

Ronaldo’s departure from the camp and his subsequent comments have therefore moved beyond a disagreement within the squad and into a formal disciplinary process.

For Portugal, the immediate priority is to establish the facts and determine whether further action is warranted. For Ronaldo, the provisional suspension leaves his international availability uncertain while the case remains unresolved.

Until the federation reaches a decision, the forward remains subject to the preventive measure, with the final consequences still to be determined.
