The Sunderland and Switzerland captain has received a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs (ยฃ136,000). The penalty will not be enforced provided he commits no further offences during a two-year probationary period. He has already paid the court costs.
Xhaka, 34, was playing for Arsenal when the offence took place in 2022, a period when Covid certificates were required for certain activities and international travel in Switzerland.
The midfielder previously explained that he had developed a deep mistrust of the vaccine and had been influenced by fear and uncertainty. He has since acknowledged that his decision was wrong.
โA few weeks ago, I spoke personally here and said that I would take responsibility for my decision. I stand by that,โ Xhaka wrote on Instagram.
โI was sentenced by summary judgment for obtaining a false certification to a suspended fine of 50 daily rates of CHF 3,000 each.
โI accept the decision and take responsibility for my actions. Thank you for the many messages of support over the past few weeks. They mean a lot to me.โ
Xhaka's response has been to acknowledge the wrongdoing rather than attempt to minimise it. His comments also recognise the support he has received while dealing with the consequences of a decision made several years ago.
The Swiss international previously said his doubts about vaccination had left him influenced by worries and uncertainty. That explanation does not remove his responsibility, but it provides context for the decision he has now accepted was a mistake.
The case also affected his international career. Switzerland's record appearance holder, with 152 caps, withdrew from the national squad during the recent international break, missing Nations League matches against Scotland, North Macedonia and Slovenia.
The Swiss authorities had confirmed that there was no general legal obligation to obtain or hold a Covid certificate, although one was required for access to certain venues, activities and travel. The measures were in place until spring 2022, after which certificates continued to be issued mainly for international travel.
Xhaka captained Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual runners-up Argentina.
He is expected to return to club action when Sunderland host Brighton on Saturday. For now, his public position is clear: he accepts the ruling, takes responsibility and intends to move forward.
