Mauricio Pochettino has been offered a contract extension to lead the United States into the 2030 World Cup, with US Soccer keen to retain the 54-year-old following an encouraging start to the tournament on home soil.

According to The Athletic, the United States Soccer Federation put the offer to Pochettino before the current tournament began, with talks between the Argentine and federation officials having been ongoing for months. Any final decision on his future is expected to be made once the World Cup has concluded, when his current deal is set to expire.

The USMNT won Group D with victories over Paraguay and Australia before falling to a 3-2 defeat against Turkey in a dead rubber final group game. A last-32 tie against Bosnia and Herzegovina in San Francisco on July 1 is next.

Beyond the 2030 World Cup, to be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, a new deal would also see Pochettino preside over the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and a Copa America to be hosted on American soil.

The former Tottenham, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager is likely to attract significant interest from club football once the tournament ends. He has been repeatedly linked with top European vacancies, and was connected to AC Milan before that job was filled. US Soccer, however, are said to be very keen to retain Pochettino regardless of any interest from club sides.

Pochettino's side have given American fans genuine belief that they can compete with the world's best, and federation chiefs are eager to ensure that momentum is not disrupted by a change in management at such a promising moment for the programme.

The offer represents a strong vote of confidence in Pochettino from US Soccer, and reflects the progress the national team has made under his guidance since he took charge.
