Raffaele Palladino reflected with pride on securing European football for Atalanta after the club drew 1-1 with Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Friday night in the final round of the Serie A season.

The draw confirmed seventh place in the final standings, which qualifies the Bergamo club for the UEFA Europa Conference League next season. It is a step down from the Champions League football Atalanta have been accustomed to under Gian Piero Gasperini in recent years, but Palladino was measured in assessing the significance of what his side had achieved over six months.

"We played a good game today too. A defeat would have been too heavy a result given what we produced on the pitch," Palladino told DAZN after the final whistle. "We are happy to have reached Europe."

When asked which moment in his tenure had left the deepest mark, the 42-year-old pointed to a defeat rather than a victory.

"The turning point was the match against Juventus. Since I arrived we went on a great run and Europe was important to us. That was a great performance that we lost without deserving to. But we have to be proud of bringing this squad into Europe."

Palladino arrived in Bergamo in the second half of the season. He was tasked with steadying a side that had lost significant momentum and stabilising their European qualification prospects.

Atalanta confirmed seventh place following the result, with Como finishing ahead of them in the race for Conference League football on goal difference โ€” a fine margin that underlined how tight the lower reaches of the top seven remained heading into the final day.

On his relationship with the club and his own future, Palladino was characteristically understated.

"I have a great relationship with the club. They gave me the chance to manage a team playing in the Champions League and I am grateful to the Percassi family. The words of appreciation I have received will stay with me. They are a sign that the work has been positive."

Whether he continues at Atalanta beyond this season remains to be resolved.
