The Belgium international arrived at Villa Park from Everton in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth £50m, initially putting pen to paper on terms that ran until 2029.
According to Footmercato journalist Sébastien Denis, that agreement is now set to be extended to 2031, tying the 25-year-old down for the long term should the report prove accurate.
Onana made 38 appearances in all competitions for Villa last season, scoring twice as Unai Emery's side finished fourth in the Premier League and secured a return to the Champions League.
He had arrived in the Midlands as a replacement for Douglas Luiz following the Brazilian's move to Juventus, in a deal that reportedly included a sell-on clause for Everton, and has since established himself as a regular fixture in Emery's midfield.
Before his move to England, Onana came through Hoffenheim's academy and had a spell at Hamburger SV, before two seasons at Lille preceded a £33m switch to Everton in 2022, where he made over 70 appearances across two campaigns at Goodison Park without ever quite establishing himself as a first-team mainstay.
Internationally, Onana has become a fixture for Belgium, winning 33 caps and scoring once, and was part of the squad that competed at Euro 2024 in Germany. He has previously been linked with a host of bigger clubs, including Arsenal, given his combination of physicality and ball-carrying ability in midfield.
Aston Villa's summer transfer business took their overall spending under Emery well past the £140m mark this window, and a new contract for Onana, if confirmed, would represent a further vote of confidence in a squad the club hopes can build on last season's top-four finish and push for silverware on multiple fronts this term.
The midfielder has become an important part of Emery's set-up since his arrival, with his physical presence and ball-carrying ability helping to shield Villa's back line while also allowing the team to progress play through midfield rather than relying solely on the wide areas.
