The France international, 28, spent four years at Leipzig between 2019 and 2023 before leaving for Chelsea in a transfer reported to be worth €60m. After spells away from Germany, he has now returned to a club where he enjoyed some of the most productive football of his career.
Speaking to Sport Bild, Nkunku said he had quickly settled back into familiar surroundings and would be happy to remain beyond the current campaign.
“I’m very happy. I feel very comfortable in the city and at the club. Of course, I can very well imagine staying longer,” he said.
The forward also reflected on the personal significance of his first spell in Saxony, which included major milestones in his development and success with the team.
“I had very important moments of my career and my life in Leipzig and with RB. I really enjoyed those four years,” Nkunku said.
His enthusiasm does not mean a permanent transfer is already agreed. Leipzig secured a season-long loan from AC Milan in August, with an option to buy the player at the end of the campaign. Any longer-term arrangement will therefore require the clubs to reach an agreement.
Nkunku acknowledged that the decision is not his alone, despite his positive feelings about returning.
“Above all, the clubs would have to agree at the end of the season. So it’s not just down to me,” he said.
RB Leipzig know exactly what Nkunku can offer. During his first spell at the club, he scored 70 goals and provided 56 assists in 172 competitive appearances, becoming one of the Bundesliga’s most productive attacking players before his move to England.
His return gives Leipzig an experienced forward who is already familiar with the club’s environment. Whether the loan becomes a permanent move will depend on his performances over the season and the financial terms that can be agreed with Milan.
For now, Nkunku has made his preference clear: he is happy to be back and would be receptive to extending his stay, provided the clubs can find a deal.
