Man United plan defensive rebuild with Hall and Truffert

Manchester United’s recruitment team are expected to revisit their defensive options next summer after the club’s decision not to sign a left-back during the last transfer window came under scrutiny.

The i Paper reports that senior figures accept the back line should have been addressed, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall still a leading target.

Manchester United explored a move for Hall in the summer but were deterred by Newcastle’s valuation and reluctance to sell. The report says the England international was open to a move to Old Trafford and that United intend to reassess the situation when the market reopens.

Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert is another option being considered. The French full-back joined the Cherries from Rennes in June 2025 for a reported £14.4m and is now into his second season on the south coast. United are understood to have admired him for some time, although competition for his signature is expected.

The left side of defence has become a particular concern because Luke Shaw is the club’s only recognised senior left-back, and his availability has again been affected by injury. Diogo Dalot and young defender Ayden Heaven have both been used out of position, while Harry Amass has yet to establish himself as a regular first-team option.

Manchester United’s wider plans will depend partly on the futures of their current centre-backs. Lisandro Martínez has been linked with Atlético Madrid and other Spanish clubs, with his contract due to expire next year, although United hold an option to extend it by a further season.

Harry Maguire is more likely to remain, with the club expected to activate the additional year in his deal. United will also assess Shaw’s fitness and whether he would accept reduced terms, as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

Matthijs de Ligt’s recovery is another factor. The Dutch defender has been out for an extended period with a back injury, and United will need to assess his fitness and form before deciding how much further investment is required in central defence.

The report indicates that United intend to sign at least one centre-back and could recruit another if Martínez leaves. Officials have not ruled out an earlier move in January if results and defensive performances continue to deteriorate, but next summer is expected to be the main opportunity to reshape the back line.
