Niko Kovac set for Borussia Dortmund contract extension after Cramer comments

Niko Kovac is set to extend his Borussia Dortmund contract until 2029, with chief executive Carsten Cramer saying the agreement is now only a matter of time.

Kovac originally joined Dortmund in January 2025 on a contract running until the end of the 2025/26 season before signing an extension through June 2027.

The Croatian has now emerged as the club's choice for a longer-term commitment after guiding Dortmund to an outstanding start to the 2026/27 campaign.

Borussia Dortmund have won their opening four Bundesliga matches and sit at the top of the table as the only side with a perfect record.

Reports have indicated that the club and Kovac have already reached an agreement in principle over a new contract running until 2029.

Cramer has now confirmed that the remaining issues are largely formal.

“The appreciation for Niko Kovac is enormous,” Cramer told SID. “It is only a matter of time, that much is clear.”

He explained that the international break had prevented every member of the club's hierarchy from being involved in the final discussions.

“Because not everyone was at the club all the time during the international break, there are still a few discussions to be had,” Cramer said.

“Therefore, formally, the situation remains open for the time being.”

Kovac's position has strengthened considerably since taking charge. Dortmund appointed him during a difficult period in January 2025, but he helped restore stability and has now overseen a run of results that has put the club at the top of the Bundesliga.

The proposed extension would also provide continuity at a club that has recently renewed the contracts of its senior executives.

For Dortmund, keeping Kovac beyond his current deal would represent a clear commitment to the direction taken under the Croatian.

While the final signature and official announcement are still to come, Cramer's comments suggest there is little doubt that Kovac will remain in charge for the long term.
