The club confirmed on Wednesday that Miley fractured his lower right leg during a training session at their Darsley Park base, with the injury occurring without contact. He underwent successful surgery and is expected to be available for pre-season ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, speaking to reporters on Friday ahead of Sunday's 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, described the moment it happened.
"It was a really innocuous moment in training on Tuesday. There was no one around him, no other play involved and he slipped. At that moment we thought maybe a twist, but he was unable to continue and we realised it was more serious than we thought."
He added his confidence in Miley's recovery.
"He faces a few months out, we hope he'll be back in and around pre-season. It's a real shame because he was playing really well โ a real blow for us but also for Lewis. But knowing his strength of character, he'll be back better than ever."
Newcastle do not want to lose another homegrown talent in the manner of Elliot Anderson, sold to Nottingham Forest in July 2024 for ยฃ35million under Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules pressure. Anderson โ coincidentally โ scored Sunday's Forest equaliser at the City Ground. Miley is viewed internally as the next genuine academy product capable of becoming a first-team cornerstone for years.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier this spring that contract talks had already begun. Miley's existing deal runs to June 2029 but his wages sit significantly below the club's top earners. A new package with a substantial pay rise is expected to be finalised before pre-season, with both parties understood to be willing.
The injury has also effectively ended Miley's slim chance of making England's World Cup squad. He had been generating quiet interest from Gareth Southgate's successor after a season that produced 34 appearances across midfield and right-back.
