Ortiz curled a deflected cross from the left straight into the net inside the first five minutes against Manchester United in Stockholm, a repeat of the impact he made in Atletico Madrid's opening friendly against Getafe, where he was among the standout performers before being replaced in the 77th minute.
The goal made him joint top scorer of Atletico's pre-season alongside Ademola Lookman, with both players on two, and came despite the eventual 2-1 defeat to United.
Speaking afterwards, the 24-year-old — who has come through Atletico's reserve side after a productive loan spell at Girona's B team and a standout campaign in Primera Federacion, where he finished as the division's second-highest scorer with 23 goals — played down talk of a permanent step up to Diego Simeone's first team.
"Really well. Trying to make the most of the chances I'm given, because for kids like us coming through the reserve side it's a huge opportunity and an honour to represent this club. I'm genuinely very happy," he said.
Asked about his style, he added: "In the end I'm a happy, direct player, I like to go forward. I think ultimately the most important thing is working for the team."
Ortiz was similarly measured when asked whether his form might convince Simeone to keep him involved beyond pre-season.
"Honestly, if I'm completely straight with you, I don't give that much importance. What I focus on most is the day to day, enjoying being here and working. Then whatever happens is God's will. That's not in my hands in the end. What is in my hands is the daily work, and I promise you there won't be any shortage of that," he said, reflecting on how far he has come in just twelve months: "It's not a test, quite the opposite.
"I keep repeating myself, but ultimately I try to enjoy it. A year ago it was unimaginable that I could be doing pre-season with Atletico's first team, and in the end it happened, so I think it would be unfair if I didn't allow myself the luxury of enjoying it."
On the result itself, Ortiz struck a defiant tone.
"We are Atletico and we have to go out to win every match. I think we're preparing very well for the start of the league season. This is the path to follow," he said.
Atletico's next test comes on August 9 against Manchester City in Seoul, with Simeone having already begun experimenting with Ortiz in more central attacking positions to make the most of a player several First and Second Division clubs were monitoring before the summer, including Racing Santander and two Italian sides.
