Nicolas Seiwald appears to be firmly on Newcastle United's radar, with the Magpies said to have made contact with RB Leipzig over the Austrian midfielder.

According to Sky, Newcastle United have enquired about Seiwald, with manager Matthias Jaissle understood to be a big admirer of the 25-year-old from their time working together previously.

At RB Leipzig, however, Seiwald remains a firm part of the club's plans for the season ahead. The Austria international, who has been capped more than 50 times by his country, is under contract until 2028, meaning Newcastle would likely need to table a substantial offer to bring the Bundesliga side to the negotiating table at all.

Seiwald joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2023, following Jaissle to Germany after working under him during a successful spell in Austria that included winning the domestic title. He has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for Leipzig, establishing a reputation as one of the league's most reliable ball-winners in central midfield.

The interest comes as Newcastle continue to search for midfield reinforcements following a summer that has seen the club lose Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimarães, with Jaissle keen to bring in players he already knows and trusts as he reshapes the squad in his first season in charge on Tyneside.

Former Leipzig head coach Ole Werner previously spoke glowingly of Seiwald's defensive contribution during his time working with the midfielder.

"How often he wins the ball for us, how he closes down the space — he's absolutely top quality at that," Werner said.

Newcastle have already added Amar Dedic from Benfica this summer as Jaissle looks to rebuild around familiar faces, and a move for Seiwald would represent a further reunion, with the pair having previously worked together to notable success during Jaissle's time in charge at Red Bull Salzburg.
