Ipswich sit second in the Championship and require only a win against QPR to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League. If they go up, the obligation-to-buy clause built into Cajuste's loan deal immediately activates, netting Napoli the full transfer fee without the need for further negotiation.
Cajuste, 26, first joined Napoli from Midtjylland in the summer of 2023 for around €12 million and became one of the symbols of the club's failed defence of their Scudetto the following season, when they finished tenth.
He was loaned to Ipswich for the 2024/25 Premier League campaign — a season that ended in relegation — and then returned to Portman Road for a second stint this year when the Suffolk club began their Championship promotion push.
Across the two loan spells, Napoli have collected €2 million in loan fees. The €7.5 million buyout would bring total receipts to €9.5 million. Should Ipswich not beat QPR but secure promotion through the play-offs, the clause would activate at that point instead.
Cajuste played a reduced role in Ipswich's season, starting only 13 of their 29 Championship games and falling out of manager Kieran McKenna's regular plans from February onwards. Whether the buyout represents value for Ipswich is a separate question — for Napoli, the arithmetic is simple and welcome.
The club's hierarchy are understood to be hoping Ipswich get the job done on Saturday.
