Moyes demands Everton backing as contract and transfer talks remain unresolved

David Moyes has publicly called on Everton's owners to back him in the transfer market this summer, revealing that his own contract situation is still unresolved entering the final day of the Premier League season.

The 63-year-old Scot returned to Everton in January 2025 to replace the sacked Sean Dyche with the club hovering a point above the relegation zone. He has since guided them to what could still be a top-half finish, and potentially European qualification, depending on Sunday's final-day results.

Despite that turnaround, no contract extension has been agreed. Moyes has one year remaining on his current deal and has still not heard whether the Friedkin Group intend to offer him a new one.

He made his position clear at his pre-match press conference.

"I believe that's what we need to do and I also want the ownership to show that as well. I want them to come out and show, 'We're here, we're going again, we're supporting you'."

He was careful not to demand unrealistic investment, acknowledging the wider financial picture.

"You can't always just keep spending bundles of cash — you have to get some rewards for it somewhere along the line. But I hope we can add to what we've got. I hope we can excite the supporters a little bit with what we're trying to do."

Among Moyes' reported transfer targets is Chelsea striker Liam Delap, who has struggled for consistent impact at Stamford Bridge since his move from Manchester City. Moyes has been monitoring Delap's situation since last summer.

Reports earlier this month suggested the Friedkin Group are prepared to offer a net spend of around £100 million this summer, enabled in part by the revenue uplift from Everton's new Hill Dickinson Stadium and a debt restructuring deal with JP Morgan worth £350 million. The stadium, which opened this season, adds at least £45 million annually to matchday revenues.

The contract question and the transfer question are linked. Moyes wants answers on both before committing to a rebuild.
