Ilyas Kherbouch, 21, described by prosecutors as the mastermind behind the raid, was found guilty of orchestrating the break-in from his prison cell and sentenced to nine years in prison along with an 80,000 euro fine by the Paris Criminal Court.
Co-defendant Moktar Diop, 24, who admitted taking part but was not accused of using violence, received a five-year sentence, two of which were suspended. A third defendant, Khyan Mamouni, 22, who prosecutors also suspected of helping direct the robbery from custody, was acquitted.
The attack took place in the early hours of 21 July 2023, when four masked men broke into Donnarumma and Elefante's ninth-floor apartment on Avenue Montaigne by climbing onto the roof and lowering themselves onto the balcony. The Italian goalkeeper, then playing for Paris Saint-Germain, was beaten with knuckle gloves until he bled, while Elefante was restrained and struck. Multiple reports on the case indicate Elefante later suffered a miscarriage that was attributed to the trauma of the attack.
According to court documents, Donnarumma was woken by an intruder saying "shh" before being struck and threatened with a knife. When the attackers demanded watches, he handed over an Audemars Piguet from the dressing table.
Elefante told investigators she handed over a Cartier watch, jewellery and 2,000 euros in cash, and was accosted for a safe code she said she did not know, with the safe later found to be empty regardless.
"They got angry thinking that I was lying," she told investigators. "They pulled me by the hair and one of them hit me on the thighs. I said I was pregnant but they continued."
The attackers left with keys to a Mercedes and a Lamborghini, along with cash, watches and luxury handbags, in a haul Donnarumma later estimated at just under a million euros. Two other participants, both minors at the time, have already been sentenced separately to three and four years respectively at a children's court, while a fourth suspect died by suicide in 2024 after previously admitting involvement.
Kherbouch, who escaped from Villepinte prison in March and spent 13 days on the run before recapture, caused repeated disruptions during the two-day trial, at one point threatening police officers after they asked his brother to leave the courtroom. Donnarumma, now 27 and playing for Manchester City, did not give evidence in person but provided a witness statement to the court.
His and Elefante's lawyers have previously said the couple remain "profoundly shocked" by the ordeal.
