Marcello Muratore exclusive: Francesco Pio Esposito - Why Inter's next great striker ready for biggest stage

For years, Inter Milan have searched for the next homegrown player capable of making a lasting impact in the first team.

In Francesco Pio Esposito, many inside the club believe they have found exactly that player.

The 20-year-old striker enjoyed a breakthrough 2025-26 season as Inter Milan won the Serie A title under Cristian Chivu, emerging from one of Italy's most productive academies to establish himself as one of the country's brightest young forwards. By the end of the campaign, Pio Esposito had become an Italy international, a Serie A champion and one of the most valuable young strikers in European football.

Few people have observed his development more closely than former Inter fitness coach Marcello Muratore, who worked throughout the club's academy structure before progressing to the senior setup.

Muratore believes Esposito's rise is no accident.

"Francesco Pio Esposito is a player who has extraordinary physical qualities," he told Football Presse.

"He has enormous room for improvement because he is still very young, but he already has characteristics that are difficult to find."

At 1.91 metres tall, Esposito possesses the physical profile traditionally associated with Italian centre-forwards. Yet those who have watched him develop point to qualities beyond his size.

After spending two seasons on loan with Spezia, where he gained invaluable experience in senior football, the striker returned to Inter and became an increasingly important figure during the title-winning campaign. Across Serie A he contributed goals and assists while continuing to adapt to life at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Muratore believes his athletic profile gives him a platform that few young strikers possess.

"He is strong physically, but he is also very coordinated," he explained. "Sometimes people see a tall player and think only about strength, but he has much more than that."

That combination of power and mobility has helped Esposito stand out throughout his development.

Muratore's perspective carries weight because he spent years overseeing physical development within Inter's academy. During that time he watched numerous highly-rated prospects come and go, but Pio Esposito left a particularly strong impression.

"What impressed me was his willingness to work," Muratore said. "He always wanted to improve and learn."

That mentality has become increasingly important in modern football, where the gap between youth football and elite senior competition continues to grow.

The challenge facing young forwards at clubs like Inter is immense. Breaking into a squad containing established internationals is notoriously difficult, particularly in Italy where tactical demands are among the most sophisticated in world football.

Yet Esposito's progress suggests he has the tools required.

The striker finished the season with meaningful contributions in Inter's title-winning campaign and further enhanced his reputation with Italy, where he has already scored goals at senior international level despite his age.

Muratore sees those developments as part of a natural progression rather than a surprise.

"He has all the qualities needed to become a top player. Now the important thing is to continue growing year after year."

The former Inter coach is also convinced that the environment at the club is helping accelerate that growth. Playing alongside elite professionals such as Lautaro Martínez offers a daily education few young forwards receive.

"When young players arrive in the first team, they learn every day from great champions," Muratore explained. "That is something that helps them enormously."

For Inter supporters, Esposito represents more than simply another promising academy graduate. He is part of a generation tasked with carrying forward the club's identity while maintaining its place at the summit of Italian football. His market value has risen sharply, his contract now runs until 2030 and expectations continue to grow with every appearance.

Muratore, however, remains focused on the qualities that first caught his eye.

"He's a boy with great potential," he said. "And above all, he has the mentality needed to keep improving."

That may ultimately prove the most important attribute of all.

Inter have produced talented players before. Very few combine physical presence, technical ability and the desire to improve in quite the same way as Francesco Pio Esposito.

For Muratore, the future remains bright. For Inter, it may already have arrived.
