Manchester City are moving to secure Josko Gvardiol’s long-term future, with talks now underway over a new contract despite the defender currently being sidelined through injury.

The Croatia international has become a major figure in Pep Guardiola’s back line since arriving from RB Leipzig and Manchester City are now looking to reward his influence with improved terms.

Gvardiol’s current deal still runs until 2028, but discussions have already started over an extension that would also see the 24-year-old receive a salary increase.

The centre-back suffered a broken shin earlier this year and is still working through his recovery, but his injury has not altered City’s plans to build around him.

Before being ruled out, Gvardiol had established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defensive performers, featuring both centrally and on the left side of defence when required.

His composure in possession, physical presence and tactical flexibility quickly made him one of Guardiola’s most trusted options during another demanding campaign.

City’s willingness to open negotiations while he remains unavailable underlines how highly he is valued inside the club.

The former Dinamo Zagreb academy product has also become one of the leaders of Croatia’s next generation, carrying growing responsibility at both club and international level.

For City, extending Gvardiol’s contract is about more than reward.

It is a signal that even with squad evolution underway, some pieces are already seen as central to the next phase at the Etihad.
