Alf-Inge Haaland says his son Erling is concentrating on football rather than Manchester City’s financial case, while insisting the current squad should not be punished for alleged events from years ago.

Manchester City are awaiting the outcome of an appeal after an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them in relation to alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations.

The findings relate to conduct between 2009 and 2018, including the use of commercial agreements that the commission considered misleading. City have challenged the verdict and maintain their innocence.

With the possibility of sanctions still hanging over the club, Erling's father believes the striker is keeping his attention firmly on performances rather than the legal proceedings.

“Erling thinks about playing as much football as he can and concentrates on that. I think it's more those of us outside the pitch who think a bit more about it,” Alf-Inge told Viaplay.

He acknowledged the seriousness of the commission's findings but stressed that the appeal process must be allowed to run its course.

“Obviously, these are serious allegations, but now there is an appeal case pending to be heard, so I think we have to stay calm, keep our cool, and wait to see how it turns out.”

The former Leeds United player also questioned whether it would be fair for members of the current squad to face punishment for alleged financial misconduct that took place before many of them arrived at the Etihad Stadium.

“Yes, in a way, one might feel that having to potentially take punishment for something done many years ago... yes, I would say so,” he added.

Alf-Inge insisted he had no inside knowledge of the case and had learned about developments through media coverage. He also felt City had struggled to put forward their position publicly while the appeal remained ongoing.

“Nothing more than what's in the media. And there is an awful lot written there, and very one-sided, I would say,” he said.

“It's hard for Manchester City to come out right now – with an ongoing appeal – and defend themselves.”

He hopes the club receive a fair hearing and believes the players have handled the uncertainty professionally.

Erling has continued to deliver on the pitch, scoring nine goals in nine Premier League appearances and 13 times in 12 matches across all competitions. However, he was unable to add to that tally in Saturday's 1-0 home defeat to Brighton.

The case remains unresolved, with City's appeal still to be heard and any eventual sanctions yet to be determined. For Alf-Inge, the immediate priority is that the process is fair and that the current players are not held responsible for events from a previous era.
