Rino Gattuso remains convinced Gimenez can rediscover his best form in the capital after a difficult season at AC Milan, and has already spoken to the Mexican directly to outline his project for the club, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The move is far from straightforward, however, with Milan yet to make a final decision on the striker's future as new head coach Ruben Amorim wants to assess him personally once he returns from an ankle injury. Gimenez himself is also in no rush, with a preference for a club competing in European competition or a switch to a different league altogether, while Lazio's proposal of a paid loan with an option to buy has not fully satisfied Milan.
As things stand, any serious move for Gimenez, who joined Milan for around €30-40m from Feyenoord in January 2025, is unlikely to advance before the second half of August.
With the Gimenez operation stuck in limbo, Lazio have kept several alternatives alive in the meantime, opening a first line of enquiry for Broja, the Albania international who endured a miserable season with Burnley, scoring just once in 26 appearances as the club was relegated to the Championship.
It is far from the first time his name has circulated at Lazio this summer, and Broja's numbers have been similarly underwhelming in recent seasons, with his only prolific campaign coming back in 2020-21 while on loan at Vitesse in the Netherlands, where he scored 11 goals in 34 games.
Roberto Piccoli and Brazilian forward John Kennedy, whose valuation at Fluminense is considered too high, are also on Lazio's list, while Niclas Fullkrug has emerged as a fresh option after returning to West Ham following his loan spell at Milan, should the London club decide to send him out on loan again.
For now, Gimenez remains the dream appointment for Gattuso and the club's clear priority, but with the operation moving slowly, Lazio's sporting department is unwilling to be left without a fallback option once the market moves into its final, more urgent weeks.
