Klopp's personal call helped seal Trapp's move to Paris FC

Jürgen Klopp played a direct role in convincing Germany goalkeeper Kevin Trapp to leave Eintracht Frankfurt and join Red Bull-backed Ligue 1 club Paris FC last summer.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Trapp revealed that the bulk of negotiations were conducted with former Germany international Mario Gomez, who serves as technical director at Paris FC, before Klopp stepped in at a critical moment.

"Then came, one day before I finally signed, Jürgen Klopp," Trapp said.

The 35-year-old left no ambiguity about the effect of that conversation.

"Everyone who has ever had the experience knows what power Klopp's words have when he speaks to you. But the main talks were already with the sporting director and coach at the time."

At the point Klopp called, the deal was not yet done. His intervention was not a formality — it was the moment that closed it.

Klopp has served as Global Sports Director across the Red Bull network of clubs since early 2024, overseeing RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, Red Bull Bragantino and Paris FC among others. The role has given him direct influence over transfers across the entire group.

Trapp joined Paris FC in mid-August after spending the majority of his career across two separate spells at Eintracht Frankfurt, making close to 400 competitive appearances and winning the UEFA Europa League in 2022 — saving the decisive penalty against Glasgow Rangers in Seville. He left with the club having just qualified for the Champions League for the first time.

Paris FC had won promotion to Ligue 1 in the summer of 2025, backed by Red Bull's network and the financial power of luxury goods billionaire Bernard Arnault, who holds a majority stake in the club. The ambition at Selhurst Park is considerable.

Trapp is now the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper and has appeared in 20 Ligue 1 matches for a side sitting eleventh in the French top flight in their debut season at the highest level.

For a player of his experience and reputation, the project made sense on multiple levels — Paris is a city he knows well from his time at Paris Saint-Germain, and family ties to the French capital were also a factor in the decision.

Klopp's involvement was the final push. Anyone who has played under him will know exactly how that phone call would have gone.
