Juventus race Bournemouth to beat July 10 deadline for Lucumí clause

Juventus have opened initial contact with Jhon Lucumí's representatives as both they and Bournemouth attempt to move quickly on the Bologna centre-back before his €28 million release clause expires on July 10.

According to Corriere dello Sport and Sky Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio, Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti has identified Lucumí as a defensive priority and the club made its first inquiries on Wednesday. The timing is urgent — the clause, valid until mid-July, represents the clearest and most cost-efficient route to completing any transfer.

Lucumí, who turns 28 on June 26, has been one of Serie A's most consistent centre-backs across four seasons in Italy. He joined Bologna from KRC Genk in the summer of 2022 for €8 million and has since established himself as the defensive leader of one of the division's most progressive clubs. This season he contributed four goals and three assists in 31 league appearances and featured in Bologna's Europa League campaign, which reached the quarter-finals before a defeat by Aston Villa.

His contract runs until June 2027 — one year remaining after this summer. He has declined renewal proposals from Bologna, making his departure this window a near-certainty.

Bournemouth entered the race immediately after confirming the departure of Marcos Senesi to Tottenham Hotspur. According to journalist Nicolò Schira, the Cherries identified Lucumí as the natural replacement and have signalled their intent to trigger the clause. Sunderland had previously submitted multiple bids in the summer of 2025, all of which were rejected, when a release clause also existed at that time.

For Juventus, the left-footed Colombian fits a profile Spalletti has consistently sought. The club's options at centre-back are thin following several injury-disrupted seasons, and Lucumí's Serie A experience and physical authority make him an immediately functional signing rather than a developmental one.

The clause expiry on July 10 concentrates every interested party's thinking. After that date, Bologna will be under no obligation to sell at any fixed price — and they may choose to hold and allow the contract to run rather than accept a discounted offer.

Both Juventus and Bournemouth know the window for the cleanest deal closes within the month.
