Jérémy Jacquet has dismissed the narrative that Liverpool swooped in at the last moment to sign him — and revealed that conversations with the Merseyside club had been ongoing for considerably longer than the public timeline suggested.

The 20-year-old French centre-back, who agreed a £60 million move from Stade Rennais in February and is due to join Arne Slot's squad this summer, gave his most detailed account yet of how the transfer came together in an interview with Ouest-France.

"Honestly, there were quite a few false things that were said," Jacquet told the newspaper. "My brother and I were saying to each other: 'But where is that coming from? But I never said that!' It was the first time I saw my name linked in that way on social media. But it means that clubs are interested in your profile."

He was direct about how quickly he aligned himself with Liverpool once they made their move.

"I am not going to say that it went fast, because I took my time over this big step," he said. "But I quickly saw myself at Liverpool. I heard people saying they arrived at the last moment, but that is not true. I was talking to them for a long time. There were also other clubs, like Manchester United. It did not happen in a week."

He also cited Liverpool's history as a decisive factor.

"When the biggest clubs in Europe are interested, you don't turn them down. They are there for a reason."

Jacquet has been sidelined since February after suffering a serious shoulder injury in a Ligue 1 match and subsequently undergoing surgery. The Athletic reported this week that he is on track to be available for first-team training in early July, putting him in line to participate in Liverpool's pre-season programme before the new campaign begins.

He came through the Rennes academy after joining at the age of eight, made his senior debut in January 2024 and was given a farewell presentation in front of the Roazhon Park crowd during Rennes' final home game of the season earlier this month.

"I arrived here 11 or 12 years ago. They didn't give up on me," he told the crowd. "So thank you to all of them."

Liverpool have been searching for a solution to their long-term centre-back situation before identifying Jacquet as the answer.

He is clear about what he intends to do when he arrives.

"I am going there to play as much as possible."
