Ipswich Town are working hard to sign SC Freiburg winger Derry Scherhant after an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga, according to Bild.

The 23-year-old settled quickly into life at SC Freiburg and increased his playing time as the season progressed, making 49 appearances across all competitions and scoring seven goals as Julian Schuster's side reached the Europa League final.

That form has not gone unnoticed elsewhere, with Bild reporting that Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town are working hard to sign the winger, though Freiburg see no need to part with an important attacker without good reason.

The German tabloid puts Freiburg's asking price at between โ‚ฌ16.5m and โ‚ฌ17.5m before the Bundesliga club would even consider a sale, a significant increase on the roughly โ‚ฌ2m Freiburg paid to sign Scherhant from Hertha Berlin only a year ago, where he had made 78 Bundesliga appearances after coming through the club's academy.

Scherhant is normally seen as playing a key role in Freiburg's squad planning for the coming years, having pushed club icon Vincenzo Grifo for a starting spot on the left flank before establishing himself on the right side of the attack, and a sale is considered unlikely.

That could change with a sufficiently strong offer, however, as is common in professional football. The forward himself, a Germany Under-21 international, could reportedly picture a move to England, and the transfer would likely prove financially rewarding for him.

Sporting ambition also comes into the equation, though: a switch to Ipswich would probably mean playing for Premier League survival, whereas Freiburg are expected to be competing for European qualification again this season, a contrast that could yet weigh on his decision.
