Just over eight months ago, Khalaili lined up against Inter Milan in the Champions League for Union Saint-Gilloise, a match Inter won 4-0 at the Lotto Park on 21 October.
Despite the result, the Israel international impressed with his pace, ability to beat defenders and dangerous crossing from the flank.
Those qualities have convinced Inter's hierarchy to pursue him as a possible long-term replacement for Denzel Dumfries.
Inter have already agreed personal terms with the player on a five-year contract and are now working to finalise a deal with Union Saint-Gilloise.
The Belgian club signed Khalaili from Maccabi Haifa for around โฌ7 million and are seeking a significant profit on the sale.
Union Saint-Gilloise value the player at around โฌ25 million including bonuses.
Khalaili has already expressed his willingness to move to Milan and is pushing for a swift resolution to the transfer.
The 2004-born winger is keen to play in Serie A and represent Inter, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Should there be no late complications, the deal could be finalised within the coming days.
