Hamburger SV right-back William Mikelbrencis will leave the club as a free agent this summer after rejecting a contract extension offer, with clubs from France, Germany, Spain and Italy all competing for the 22-year-old Frenchman.

Fichajes reported that Mikelbrencis's availability on a free transfer has generated significant interest ahead of the summer window, with a Ligue 1 club currently in the top six understood to be leading the chase and prepared to move quickly. Schalke 04 and Borussia Monchengladbach are both tracking his situation in Germany, while Girona in Spain and Parma in Italy have also declared strong interest.

Mikelbrencis joined Hamburg from FC Metz at the age of 18 in August 2022, initially breaking into the second team before establishing himself as a key player across two seasons in the 2. Bundesliga and then following the club into the Bundesliga this season after their promotion.

He has made 20 Bundesliga appearances this campaign, contributing four assists β€” all of which came in the second half of the season from late January onwards.

Standing 182cm tall, Mikelbrencis can play as a right-back or be pushed into a more advanced midfield position. His key qualities are physical β€” exceptional stamina, an ability to repeat high-intensity efforts across 90 minutes β€” combined with an attacking output that has steadily grown with experience. He has represented France at every youth level from Under-15 through Under-20.

Hamburg made a formal offer to extend his contract but the player's camp considered the proposal insufficient relative to the market his form has created. The club are resigned to losing him, though head coach Steffen Baumgart is understood to have had a personal conversation with Mikelbrencis in an attempt to persuade him to stay.

At 22 and available for free, he represents exactly the kind of opportunity that clubs across Europe fight over in summer windows. The French top-six club appears to be offering the clearest pathway to regular Champions League or European football β€” a factor that is likely to prove decisive.
