Junior Kroupi put the visitors ahead after 16 minutes before Gyokeres levelled from the penalty spot after Ryan Christie handled in the box.
Alex Scott then struck the winner with 15 minutes remaining, leaving Arsenal's title lead cut to nine points โ with Manchester City holding two games in hand and a trip to the Etihad still to come next weekend.
Speaking to Match of the Day, Gyokeres said: "We had some okay chances at the end. The pitch was maybe a bit dry there to be honest, so that didn't help, but of course like I said we all need to do better and take our chances."
The comment spread quickly online, with fans pointing out that the Emirates is Arsenal's own home ground. One wrote: "Pitch was a bit dry, he saidโฆ Bro doesn't remember that it's actually their own home." Another noted the pitch had been watered at half-time.
Gyokeres also spoke to TNT Sports, offering a broader view of where Arsenal fell short.
"I think we could have played much better in both halves really. We didn't control the game well enough. And they're a good side so when they get some chances, they will make it difficult for us and we had to do better there and then, of course, attacking wise do more."
Asked if Arsenal were disjointed, he was candid.
"Yeah, I think we had a good feeling before the game and during the game we were ready for everything, but they made it difficult for us and we made it difficult for ourselves and that's why the end result is like it is. It always hurts when you lose."
Despite the result โ Arsenal's third domestic defeat in four matches โ Gyokeres insisted the squad retained full belief.
"We have a lot of games still to play and we know how good we are โ we just have to show it on the pitch. We have to get back into that rhythm that we can play in and believe in ourselves."
"Very confident," he added when pressed. "I think we don't need to get stuck too much on what happened today. We need to look forward, think positive and look forward to the games."
Arsenal face Sporting in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday, holding a 1-0 lead. Then comes City at the Etihad. The next seven days will go a long way to deciding whether this title race has a twist left in it.
