Guardiola hints at Manchester City future with comment after Wembley win

Pep Guardiola left Wembley with a throwaway line that set tongues wagging, saying "then holidays and come back next season" when asked what lay ahead — something meaningless or loaded with significance depending on who was listening.

His contract runs until the summer of 2027, and he has said publicly he will honour it. But speculation about this being his final English season has not abated, with Enzo Maresca already being widely discussed as his successor.

Whatever his plans, the man himself looked well. After Manchester City's dramatic 2-1 win over Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final — Nico González's 87th-minute stunner from 30 yards settling it — Guardiola spoke with a clarity and contentment that has been less visible in recent years.

"After what happened last season, there was a question mark about this season. How would the players react? We have arrived where the players are at their best moment. The club is defined by arriving at the later stages fighting for the title. I am so proud of that.

"Of course, I love to lift titles but being there and not taking a step back, that defines a big club. Not all the clubs can win all the time but being there, fighting against Arsenal, against Liverpool in previous seasons, four FA Cups in a row, that is extraordinary. It is time to enjoy it."

He was also candid about the day's near-disaster, with Southampton taking a shock lead before City's late fightback.

"You have to wait for the holding midfielder to score an outstanding goal. And Jeremy with the first. How many times in the second half did Southampton cross the halfway? One. And what a goal. Football is unpredictable."

City are top of the Premier League on goal difference from Arsenal and face a potential treble. He gave his players two days off and told them they could travel abroad.
