Gordon clears medical hurdle as Barcelona seal £70m deal ahead of World Cup

Anthony Gordon will undergo a medical with Barcelona on Thursday after Newcastle United accepted the Catalan club's offer of £70 million.

It brings to an end a protracted saga that at various points involved Bayern Munich, Liverpool and a potential British transfer record.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement on Wednesday evening. The initial fee is £60.6 million, rising to £70 million with add-ons and including a percentage clause on any future sale. Barcelona sporting director Deco had held direct talks with Gordon's representatives at the start of the week, and negotiations between the clubs moved quickly once formal contact was made on Tuesday.

The deal ends Bayern Munich's pursuit. The Bundesliga club had spoken to Gordon and reached a framework of personal terms across several weeks of discussions, but their valuation ceiling of £60 million was consistently below what Newcastle were willing to accept. Bayern declined to move further.

Liverpool had also held a long-standing interest. Manager Arne Slot identified Gordon as his preferred replacement for Mohamed Salah on the left, and the player's Merseyside roots — he is from Liverpool and came through Everton's academy — were understood to hold personal significance. But Liverpool's pursuit was ultimately redirected toward RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola.

Everton hold a 15 per cent sell-on clause from Gordon's 2023 departure to Newcastle United for £45 million. Based on the profit element of this deal, they will receive a fee understood to be in the region of £3.8 million.

Gordon missed Newcastle's final six Premier League matches of the season. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed the absence was related to a hip injury but acknowledged it was also connected to the transfer speculation surrounding the player.

He finishes as the club's top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions — 10 of them in the Champions League, which Newcastle will not compete in next season after finishing 12th in the Premier League. That absence of European football was a significant factor in Gordon's desire to move.

Personal terms with Barcelona are understood to be agreed. The medical on Thursday is the final step.

Barcelona will also continue discussions this week over Marcus Rashford, whose loan from Manchester United expires. They want a second loan rather than triggering the £26 million purchase clause available until 15 June.
