The 28-year-old, who turns 29 later this month, has spent eleven seasons at Liverpool since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015. He remains the club's longest-serving player but has started only six Premier League matches this campaign, his opportunities limited by injury and competition for places following Liverpool's defensive investment last summer.
Gomez addressed his situation publicly this week, making clear he cannot guarantee he will still be at the club next season.
"I think anything can happen. I don't know is the honest answer. I've only got a year left, so I don't know, but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess. I'm so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I'll always be grateful to have had eleven years at a place like this."
According to the Daily Mail, both AC Milan and Besiktas have revived their interest in the defender. Milan made a bid of around 13 million pounds for Gomez last summer before the move collapsed. They remain admirers and Gomez is understood to be particularly receptive to what the Italian club could offer. Besiktas have also registered interest, though the San Siro holds more appeal for the player.
Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is not expected to stand in Gomez's way if a reasonable offer arrives. The club would prefer not to lose him on a free transfer next summer, and with Jeremy Jacquet arriving from Rennes ahead of the new season, the competition for minutes at centre-back is only going to increase.
Gomez has made 272 appearances across eleven years at Anfield. He leaves โ if he does โ as a Champions League winner and as one of the few players to bridge the Klopp era and the Slot era with his reputation wholly intact.
