Gladbach willing to let Neuhaus leave for free to cut €4m wage bill

Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Monchengladbach are prepared to release midfielder Florian Neuhaus on a free transfer this summer — despite him having a year left on his contract — to remove his salary of around €4m from the club's books, according to Bild.

In an unusual arrangement, the club are understood to be willing to compensate Neuhaus for the loss of earnings that any move would inevitably involve, given that no suitor is likely to match his current salary.

That would effectively see Borussia Monchengladbach pay to offload a player — a measure of how determined the club are to cut costs.

Neuhaus, 29, had a modest rehabilitation in 2025-26, making 18 appearances and recovering a degree of form after two years as a peripheral figure.

But head coach Eugen Polanski made clear in May he remained dissatisfied with the former Germany international's performances, and with Gladbach having already signed two new central midfielders in Zento Uno and Enzo Leopold, there is no obvious path back to regular football at Borussia-Park.

The midfielder made 238 appearances for the club across nine seasons, contributing 26 goals and 30 assists, and won ten Germany caps. He was once considered one of the brightest young midfielders in the Bundesliga. His career has not scaled those heights since.

No buyer has emerged despite the player being available, pointing to salary as the central sticking point.

The situation illustrates Gladbach's broader financial squeeze. The club finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season and qualified for the Europa League, but are not in a position to carry expensive passengers. Neuhaus's case has become symbolic of a recruitment model that created salary obligations difficult to unwind.
