Yan Diomande has been urged to turn down Liverpool's advances this summer and spend another season at RB Leipzig, with former Germany international Steffen Freund pointing to Florian Wirtz's difficult adaptation at Anfield as a cautionary tale.

Diomande, 19, has emerged as Liverpool's primary transfer target as new manager Andoni Iraola looks to reshape his attacking options.

The Ivory Coast winger — currently starring at the 2026 World Cup, having joined Leipzig from Spanish side Leganés for £17m last year — is valued by the Bundesliga club at around £112m. Liverpool are prepared to bid up to £86m, leaving a significant gap between the two clubs that has yet to be bridged. Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the situation.

Freund, who played as a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City during his career in England, told SportBILD: "Physically, he should be able to manage it.

"But take Florian Wirtz as an example: he's joined the reigning champion and was expected to win the title straight away.

"The pressure on him is immense. In the Premier League, he's up against better full backs than in the Bundesliga. It's a different kettle of fish — it's a real battle there.

"He should stay in Leipzig for another year. If he maintains his excellent form next season, he can still move to a big club. Because the next move will bring pressure — much more pressure than he's faced so far. He can afford to have the odd bad game in Leipzig. If he leaves now, and if it's not the right club, he'll take a step back."

Wirtz joined Liverpool for £116m last summer after a prolific campaign at Bayer Leverkusen and performed well in his debut season, though adapting to the pace and physicality of the Premier League carried its pressures.

RB Leipzig are themselves pushing Diomande to sign a new contract containing a release clause rather than depart immediately, offering him the ability to pick his next club freely in summer 2027.
