Gerrard urges Liverpool to hold firm on Jones amid Inter Milan interest

Steven Gerrard has made a direct public appeal for Liverpool not to sell Curtis Jones this summer, warning the club that losing its remaining local connection in the first team would be a mistake they would come to regret.

Jones, 25, is the only Merseyside-born senior player at Anfield following Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid last summer. He has 12 months remaining on his contract, talks over an extension are reported to be on hold, and Inter Milan have already signalled their interest โ€” with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming Jones has shown "complete openness" to the move.

Speaking on BFM Radio while in Kuala Lumpur, Gerrard was unambiguous.

"I think the academy system at our club is crucial and vital. It's important we keep producing homegrown talents. I think naturally, being around the city, growing up in the city, we understand the demands of the club, the style, what the fans want. It's embedded in us because we know the city inside out.

"I wouldn't allow Curtis Jones to leave. I wished and hoped that Trent didn't leave us. Certainly, you'll understand and respect every player has got their own career and can make their own decisions."

Gerrard also framed the broader importance of local talent to Liverpool's identity.

"I think it's critical and key that we keep producing homegrown talent, and what you do have to say is that Liverpool have been really good at that. If you look back โ€” Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Trent, myself, even the likes of players like Jay Spearing and Stephen Warnock who don't play the same amount of games, but they still come into the team and they understand the values and the principles of what we're about."

Jones has made 25 starts this season and has featured at right-back in recent weeks after finding his path to central midfield blocked. His contract, last renewed in 2022, runs to 2027 โ€” giving Liverpool one more summer to either extend or sell for a fee. Inter were among the clubs to sound out a move in the January window, and the Italian side's continued pursuit has only intensified since.

Jones' reported preference is to remain at Liverpool if he can be guaranteed a central role. Whether head coach Arne Slot will provide that assurance, particularly with the club's broader summer reshaping still unresolved, remains to be seen.

Gerrard's intervention will carry weight with supporters, if not necessarily with the recruitment team. The sentiment runs deeper than loyalty โ€” it touches on a question about what kind of club Liverpool want to be as the generation that defined the Klopp era continues to disperse.
