According to RTI Esporte, the development comes at a telling moment: Emerson Zulu, the player's father and FIFA-licensed agent, has travelled to Portugal, where Flamengo are playing in the Algarve Cup, to monitor the situation in person as European interest resurfaces.
Emerson Royal was set to start against Benfica on Saturday at the Estádio Intermunicipal Faro/Loulé, a fixture being viewed as a further showcase for a player who remains highly rated in Europe.
Flamengo have avoided naming a price publicly, but sources close to the club indicate that offers above €15m would be given serious consideration. The club's stance is that Emerson Royal remains an important part of head coach Leonardo Jardim's plans and will not be sold for anything considered below his market value, though there is an acknowledgement internally that a sufficiently strong bid would be difficult to turn down entirely.
The sporting side of any potential departure is what concerns Jardim most. He views the 27-year-old as a key piece of his defensive system, and finding a like-for-like replacement with similar physical and technical attributes is seen as one of the more difficult rebuilding jobs the club could face, even with Flamengo's finances in relatively good shape.
Emerson Royal joined Flamengo from Milan in 2025 for around €9m and has a contract running until December 2028, having rebuilt his reputation and reawakened interest from Europe since returning to Brazilian football.
Internally, there is recognition that patience has its limits. Flamengo's preference is to keep Emerson Royal through to the end of the season and reassess only once the European transfer window is fully open, with the club unwilling to negotiate on anything but a significantly improved offer.
Until then, the player's focus stays on the pitch, even as his father's trip to Portugal is being read by those close to the situation as another sign that talks over his future are far from finished.
