Even as a child in Ajax's academy, Schaken did not lack self-belief. In an interview with ESPN that became something of a legend, he said:
"I play at Ajax because I'm simply good. Better than my father. I practised a lot to get to a pro club."
Rijnmond later put him in front of a camera and he was no more modest.
"I start at Ajax and after that I'd preferably go to a slightly lesser club abroad, so then I hope that maybe I can go to Manchester City. From there I want to go to Real Madrid!"
Feyenoord's newest first-team teenager scored within minutes of coming on for his Eredivisie debut at NEC Nijmegen earlier this month, curling a left-footed shot into the top corner in the 63rd minute to make it 3-1. At 17 years and 79 days he became the youngest player to score on his debut in the Dutch top flight.
He is naturally right-footed, and that regular watchers of Dutch youth football had seen him do that dozens of times.
He is the son of Ruben Schaken, a former Netherlands international with seven caps who played 136 times for Feyenoord. His brother Kirayno, 18, is knocking on the door at Heerenveen. Jerayno started out at SV Lelystad '67 and passed through PEC Zwolle to Ajax, who sent him away in 2019 because of his behaviour. He spent six years at Heerenveen before choosing Feyenoord at 15.
"Besides the fact that it's very special that my father played here and that as a little boy I regularly sat in De Kuip to watch his matches, I think everything is present at the club for me to develop further."
His profile has grown quickly. Schaken scored in a friendly against Real Madrid's age-group side, which Feyenoord won 3-0, and in the Youth League opener against Barcelona (2-1), and FC Twente bid €1 million for him in the summer. Feyenoord refused, and his father publicly criticised the club, telling ESPN that the €10 million they were reported to want was "an absurd amount for a youth player who has yet to make his debut in the first team".
Schaken, whose contract runs until mid-2028, is now valued at a minimum of €2 million by Transfermarkt. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has already used six teenagers this season, among them Thijs Kraaijeveld and Shaqueel van Persie.
Technical director Dévy Rigaux has said he wants homegrown players to play.
"Furthermore, I think it's very important that lads who have a connection with this club are on the pitch here. We have an excellent youth system, a few big talents are coming and I like that they will break through in Feyenoord 1."
