Fabregas used his pre-season press conference on the eve of the Como Cup to lay out a clear message for his squad: humility, hunger and hard work, with the Spaniard confirming Nico Paz will return in time for the visit of Udinese but will sit out the Liverpool friendly.
Como host Villarreal and AlUla in the second edition of their own summer tournament, an event that has grown since last year's launch and now also features Crystal Palace, Famalicão and RC Lens, though those three sides face each other in fixtures away from Lake Como.
"We're very happy to have this opportunity, to create this competition, our president is always creative," Fabregas said. "Every year we bring in stronger opposition, for even better games here in Como.
"Obviously every minute counts, every training session... every season starts from zero. Whoever did well last year has to come back and find that level again. The young players have to show me their motivation.
"It's all a huge challenge, but tomorrow, playing these two games, especially Villarreal at such a high level, will be a serious test."
Asked whether this could be the season Como finally win something of note after their historic first Champions League qualification, Fabregas played down any focus on personal ambition.
"It's not important on a personal level, I don't care if I do well but that Como does well. People keep coming to the Sinigaglia, then you win or you lose, but the most important thing is Como. For me, every player who stays or arrives at Como has to understand we're not City or Arsenal, we're a humble team. This season we'll be among the youngest in the whole of Europe. So energy, humility, work... there's still so much missing, on the pitch and off it. We'll show that every year the club is equal to every challenge."
On new signing Mattia Liberali, who trained with the squad early after asking to start ahead of schedule, Fabregas was enthusiastic.
"He called me four or five days before we started, he wanted to begin early. I'm very happy, in three or four days you can already see what kind of player he is. I like him, he understands our dynamics, our game, and he's got a real desire to learn. He understands everything. He plays tomorrow. It's a great opportunity for him and for all of us."
On the rest of the squad's rebuild, following the departures of Alberto Moreno and Sergi Roberto and the arrivals of Kaiki and Luis Milla, he added: "It helped a lot knowing the replacements would arrive soon. I'm very happy, Luis will give us a huge hand, as a leader. Kaiki is Brazilian, which means I like him a lot, how he plays and defensively strong. He doesn't mess around, he goes into duels hard."
Fabregas confirmed Nico Paz would rejoin the squad in England on 17 August for the Udinese match but would sit out the friendly against Liverpool, declining to comment on the playing time given to the Argentine at this summer's World Cup.
He also pointed to UEFA squad-list limitations in the Champions League as a reason for continuing to develop academy players like Riccardo Cassano and Fabio Rispoli rather than relying purely on the market, while praising Roberto Mancini's return as Italy manager as "very positive" for a country he said he felt part of.
