"You've got a nice layout here. It's the first time I've seen a nice pitch [in this area] apart from United and City," Sancho told the club in an interview shared on their social media, as he trains at 10th-tier Flixton FC while waiting for his next move as a free agent following the end of his Manchester United contract.
Flixton's Valley Road ground, originally opened by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1995, had fallen into disrepair and hosted little more than Sunday league football before American financier Christopher Garcia, chief executive of Wilshire Quinn Capital, bought the club in February 2025 and invested in upgrading the facilities.
The near-2,000-capacity venue had briefly been listed for sale at £500,000 before Garcia's takeover, and Flixton — which folded in 2012 before being revived — are now preparing for their first competitive season back from the brink, with former Salford City boss Rhodri Giggs, brother of United legend Ryan, working as assistant manager.
Sancho's own situation remains unresolved. Qatari club Al-Rayyan have already made an approach, while Atlético Madrid, Besiktas and Roma have all been credited with interest at various points, and Borussia Dortmund — the club that sold him to United for £73 million in 2021 — have stopped short of ruling out a third spell for the winger. He promised he would be at Flixton's ground to watch the club play next Tuesday while he continues weighing his options.
The five seasons since his big-money move to Old Trafford never delivered on that promise, but Sancho has still managed to reach a European final with three different clubs in three different competitions during a string of loan spells away from United — at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa, winning the Europa League with the latter.
It is a strange footnote to a spell in Manchester that otherwise brought just 12 goals and six assists in 83 appearances, numbers that fell well short of the expectations attached to one of the most sought-after young wingers in Europe when he first arrived from Dortmund.
