Estevao faces fresh injury concern after hamstring setback against Manchester United

Share

Estevao Willian lasted just 15 minutes of Chelsea's Premier League match against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday before being forced off with what head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed is a hamstring injury.

The 18-year-old was through on goal when he pulled up, got his shot away, and immediately signalled that he needed to come off. Alejandro Garnacho replaced him โ€” facing his former club for the first time. Rosenior said after the game that Estevao "was crying at half-time. Really devastated for him."

The timing is particularly cruel. Estevao had only returned from a previous hamstring problem a month ago, missing half a dozen matches in that spell. He made his first Premier League start in two months against Manchester City last weekend before this setback.

"He's an outstanding player," Rosenior had said of Estevao before the game. "Just his fearlessness. His technicality, his ability to go 1v1 or 2v1 again sometimes."

"He's very humble, he wants to improve. He's always got a smile on his face. Which I love, because he genuinely enjoys playing football. When you have that grounding, you can go on to do anything you want in your career. He can be as good as he wants to be."

Chelsea lost the match 1-0 to a Matheus Cunha goal, leaving them sixth in the Premier League with Champions League qualification increasingly under threat. Six games remain.

With the World Cup less than two months away, the injury could also affect Estevao's involvement in Brazil's pre-tournament preparations, adding a further dimension to what is already a difficult situation for one of the club's most exciting young talents.
