VfL Wolfsburg confirmed that the 34-year-old's contract, originally due to run until 2027, has been terminated by mutual agreement with immediate effect, following his 34 appearances for the club since joining as a free agent in September 2025.
Sporting director Dieter Hecking said the decision was left entirely in the player's hands: "For us it was clear that the decision about his future lay with Christian. We wanted to give him this freedom in this special situation and have now granted his request for a contract termination."
Eriksen has not featured for Wolfsburg's first team since 7 June, when he collapsed clutching his chest during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in Odense, a frightening echo of the cardiac arrest that nearly ended his career at Euro 2020.
He was given medical treatment on the pitch before being taken to hospital, and Wolfsburg said in July that he would begin an individual rehabilitation programme in Denmark. He has fitted an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator since his 2021 collapse.
Eriksen said he now needs to be closer to home:"At the moment it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I'm glad we were able to find a solution together."
He had warm words for the club and its supporters as he departed: "It was a great pleasure playing for you, and I will gladly remember that time."
Wolfsburg's statement did not address whether Eriksen intends to continue his playing career or is considering retirement. Denmark's all-time leader in senior caps, with more than 150 appearances, he previously overcame the same health scare to play for Brentford and Manchester United, winning the FA Cup and EFL Cup at Old Trafford before joining Wolfsburg, who were relegated from the Bundesliga last season.
