Rúben Dias has promised Manchester City’s players will defend the club and fight for it as they prepare to host Paris Saint-Germain, insisting the squad remains calm amid the scrutiny surrounding the Premier League champions.

Manchester City are appealing an independent panel’s findings that the club breached Premier League financial rules. Dias, one of the team’s captains, said the players continued to trust the club and were concentrating on their football.

“Personally, and I really feel like I speak for the whole group, we trust the club. We're very calm and were very focused on enjoying football,” Dias said.

“We know the team we've got, we want to make the most out of it, we want to win, and that's the only thing in our mind. If there's more or less noise, people don't love us winning and we love to win.”

Asked how he was approaching his responsibilities as captain in the current circumstances, the defender said his role remained the same, even if the situation presented a different challenge.

“Just as any other year, any other captain, or any other kind of responsibility, because to be the captain of your team is to always be there for whatever is needed.

“This time it's maybe a different challenge, well not different because it happened in the past already.

“I'm here for it and so will the other three captains and the rest of the team. We will defend the club, we will fight for it and we trust the club.”

Dias also backed Enzo Maresca’s defence of City’s celebrations following their 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. The reaction to the result attracted criticism, but the Portugal international said winning at one of English football’s most difficult venues deserved to be enjoyed.

“I very much stand by the manager's words as well. To win at Anfield in whatever circumstance, whether it's earlier in the season or later in the season, we will enjoy it just as much.

“We will celebrate however it feels in the moment and it will obviously be a show of how much it means to us.”

Erling Haaland was also central to the celebrations, with Dias praising the striker’s importance while highlighting the mentality shown throughout the squad.

“Obviously it's him, he's important just as everyone else in the team. He talked about mental strength, which obviously is one to bring out, how calm everyone has been, how mentally strong everyone has been.

“Trusting the club and just playing with a smile on their faces and that shows a lot of character.”

City now turn their attention to PSG, with Dias aware of the quality awaiting them. The defender said his familiarity with several members of the French side had given him a clear appreciation of their ability and tactical flexibility.

“They're obviously a great team, there's no way not to say it. I personally know a few players and I know how good they are. You can see the flexibility they have in each moment of the game and obviously I feel like those Portuguese players, I know so well, are also a reflection of the rest of the team.

“You need to be very good to beat them and that's what we aim for.”
