The 37-year-old, who has scored three goals in three matches since joining the Galician club, said the decision stemmed entirely from a breakdown in his relationship with Gabon's government rather than any issue with football itself.
He confirmed his retirement in an interview on Canal+ programme Talent d'Afrique, closing a chapter that began more than a decade ago and made him the country's all-time leading scorer with 40 goals in 83 appearances.
The rupture traces back to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Gabon were eliminated in the group stage without a single point after defeats to Cameroon, Mozambique and Ivory Coast.
Aubameyang played through the tournament despite a thigh injury that ultimately forced him to withdraw before the final group match, later undergoing medical examinations at Olympique de Marseille, his club at the time. Government criticism followed the elimination, much of it directed squarely at the veteran forward.
"They humiliated and smeared me even though I played at the Africa Cup of Nations while injured," Aubameyang said. "It was the last straw, and I'd rather leave it there."
Gabonese president Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema had dissolved the national team's entire coaching staff and suspended the squad indefinitely in the aftermath of the tournament, describing the display as damaging to "a part of our national identity."
Aubameyang and veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga were both excluded from the squad as part of the fallout, before being reinstated once the suspension was lifted.
"I think the problems with the national team go far beyond the insignificant role that I play," Aubameyang said, closing the interview on a defiant note.
His international retirement comes months after FIFA had warned Gabon's football federation that political interference in team affairs could result in serious sanctions, forcing the government to withdraw its punitive measures at the time.
New head coach Sébastien Migne must now plan for Gabon's future without their most decorated player, even as Aubameyang's club form with Deportivo La Coruna shows no sign of slowing down.
