Marc Cucurella has announced on Movistar that he will retire from international football entirely if Spain beat Argentina in Sunday's World Cup final, with the defender making an unusual pledge in honour of coach Luis de la Fuente in the process.

Cucurella, who has played every minute of Spain's run to the final in North America, believes winning the trophy would represent the perfect way to bring his international career to a close.

The 27-year-old, who already won the European Championship with Spain in 2024, feels that completing the international double would be the ideal way to end his time with La Roja. He has become a key figure under De la Fuente, holding down a regular starting spot in Spain's defence throughout the tournament.

Speaking to L'Equipe, Cucurella, who has left Chelsea for Real Madrid this summer, explained his reasoning for being ready to step away from the national team if Spain lift the trophy.

"If we win the World Cup, I'll call Luis the next day and tell him he doesn't need to count on me any more, that I'm retiring from the national team," he said.

"With a European Championship and a World Cup, it can't get any better."

Cucurella's retirement pledge was not the only promise he made. The defender, known for his eccentric personality and distinctive hairstyle, also committed to getting a permanent tattoo in honour of the man who has led Spain back to the top of international football. Should La Roja beat the defending champions, the 27-year-old says he will head straight to a tattoo parlour for a very specific design.

Confirming the plan in a separate interview with Fox Sports, Cucurella said: "I would get a small tattoo of the face of the Spanish national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, on my bicep if we were to win the World Cup."

The pledge adds an unusual personal subplot to Sunday's final, with Cucurella's international future, and a lasting piece of body art, potentially hinging on the outcome of the biggest match of his career.
