The 29-year-old underwent a pulsed field ablation at Spire Manchester Hospital on Tuesday morning after being diagnosed with a mild, benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm that doctors deemed non-serious but which still required a minimally invasive procedure to correct.
"On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital. The operation was a complete success," Napoli said in a statement, adding that the midfielder would rest for two weeks before resuming training.
The issue first emerged when McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes of Napoli's 2-1 defeat to Como on August 30. He subsequently missed Saturday's 3-2 defeat away to Inter Milan, a game in which Napoli surrendered a two-goal lead, and the procedure means he will also sit out Wednesday's Champions League opener at home to Arsenal along with two further matches. Head coach Massimiliano Allegri hopes to have his midfielder available again when Napoli host Frosinone on October 10, their first fixture after the international break.
McTominay played down the seriousness of the issue at a recent awards ceremony, saying: "I'm fine, the procedure was something I'd planned to do with the club for quite a while."
Napoli have made an underwhelming start to the defence of their Serie A title, losing two of their opening three league matches to sit 12th in the table, six points off the top, a slow start compounded by the absence of their reigning MVP.
McTominay was named the division's standout performer during Napoli's title-winning campaign in 2025 and has continued to be a key figure under Allegri, making him a significant loss for the club even over a short absence.
The Scotland international's absence will also be felt at international level, with new Scotland head coach Sébastien Pocognoli set to begin his tenure without him across four Nations League fixtures between September 26 and October 6, as the team looks to rebuild following a disappointing World Cup exit.
McTominay's long-term future in Naples remains unresolved, too, with his contract running to 2028 and no clarity yet over whether a new deal will follow.
