Club officials took stock of the situation at their Donaueschingen training camp, where sporting director Piero Ausilio joined deputy Dario Baccin to discuss the club's next moves with head coach Cristian Chivu.
The aim remains to complete the squad with the profiles considered the best fit, without being rushed into decisions, on the belief that the quality of the deals matters more than the timing.
According to Corriere dello Sport, one of Chivu's stated priorities is reinforcing his midfield. The Romanian coach has reiterated the need to add a new midfielder and continues to see Curtis Jones as the ideal profile to complete the department.
Any deal, though, will inevitably be tied to departures elsewhere, with the club needing to create financial room before making a serious move for the Liverpool midfielder.
Inter's plan is for next season's midfield to be built around seven players. Aleksandar Stankovic is expected to be part of that group, having picked up positive reviews during pre-season training. On the other side of the ledger, the club is weighing up possible departures, with Kristjan Asllani and Davide Frattesi among the players who could leave Milan.
Yanis Massolin also looks set to depart, probably on loan, in search of more regular football and further development away from Inter Milan.
Frattesi is understood to hope for a stay in Italy, with Juventus, Roma and Napoli all credited with interest, while Asllani could yet return to Besiktas at a reduced fee after his loan spell was not made permanent. Any exits would help fund Chivu's pursuit of Jones, who remains top of his list after the club saw moves for other midfield targets fall through earlier in the window.
With twelve senior midfielders currently on the books, Inter's hierarchy is under no illusions about the scale of the rebuild required in that area before a fresh addition can be squeezed in.
Barella, Calhanoglu, Sucic and Mkhitaryan are all considered untouchable in Chivu's plans, leaving the club to focus its efforts on moving on the fringe players rather than trimming its most trusted performers.
