Chelsea have rejected Barcelona's informal enquiry about Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, making clear through intermediaries that the 24-year-old is not available for transfer and will not be sold this summer.

According to ESPN Brasil, Barcelona had been working on a plan for Pedro behind the scenes for approximately a month, having identified him as the primary fallback if their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julián Álvarez breaks down.

Álvarez remains Barcelona's first choice, but Atlético are demanding around €140 million — a figure that has led the Catalan club to explore more affordable alternatives.

Pedro was approved by Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick as a target, and his profile has long been considered suited to their style. Former Barcelona player and current football coordinator Bojan Krkić made his preference public.

"Joao Pedro is ideal for the Barça system. I would bet on Joao Pedro rather than Julián — I like him more. He finishes, he plays well, he is very complete. He is similar to Julián but he is more of a goalscorer and a better player."

Chelsea's response to the approach was swift and unequivocal. The club communicated through third parties that Pedro is central to their plans and that even a fee in the region of €100 million would not be enough to open discussions.

The Brazilian forward, who joined from Brighton and Hove Albion last summer for over €60 million, has delivered 19 goals and nine assists in 46 appearances in his first season at Stamford Bridge, justifying the faith placed in him.

Pedro himself is reported to have no interest in leaving, with his focus entirely on finishing the season with Chelsea and then preparing for the World Cup with Brazil, where he is expected to play a prominent role under Carlo Ancelotti.

His contract runs until 2033, removing any urgency on Chelsea's part to negotiate and giving the club all the leverage in any future conversation. Barcelona will need to redirect their search elsewhere.
