Celta Vigo have secured the future of young central defender Anxo Rodríguez by extending his contract until June 2030, continuing their efforts to retain the leading prospects emerging from their academy.

The 19-year-old has established himself as an important player for Celta Fortuna, helping the reserve side win promotion to the second division last season. His development has also brought international recognition, having won the European Under-19 Championship with Spain in the summer.

Anxo’s renewal follows that of fellow academy defender Javi Rodríguez, who agreed a new deal until 2030 just four days earlier. Both centre-backs came through the club’s A Madroa youth system and share the same representation.

“I'm very, very happy to renew with the club of my life. As well as being a player, I'm a Celta supporter,” Anxo said.

The Pontevedra-born defender joined Celta as a child and progressed through the club’s youth teams before moving into the Fortuna setup. He made his debut for the reserve side during the 2024-25 season and became a regular under coach Fredi Álvarez.

His performances were instrumental in Fortuna’s promotion to the second division, earning him a more prominent role as he began his first season in senior professional football.

Anxo has continued to feature regularly in the current campaign despite the increased demands of the division. His progress has also taken him through Spain’s youth international teams, with his European Under-19 Championship success representing a significant milestone.

The defender’s development has brought him closer to the first team managed by Claudio Giráldez. He joined the senior squad for pre-season in Italy, where he featured in friendly matches against Sassuolo and Napoli.

That experience offered a glimpse of the next step in his career, although he remains part of Fortuna’s plans as he continues to gain experience at senior level.

Anxo has also had to learn from mistakes during his development. His performances have not been without errors, but Celta Vigo have continued to trust his potential and his ability to improve through regular football.

The contract extension gives both player and club greater security as he works towards establishing himself at the highest level. Celta have made retaining homegrown talent a priority, and Anxo’s new agreement reflects their confidence in his long-term prospects.

With his contract now running until 2030, the young defender has time to continue developing at Fortuna while pursuing his ambition of breaking into the senior side.
