Maldini scored the decisive penalty in Cagliari's 2-1 win away at Atalanta on Saturday, his second goal in as many matches after also netting the winner against Lecce the previous weekend.
The forward stayed in Milan rather than travelling back to Sardinia with the squad, but was involved in a road accident in the early hours of Sunday morning after a night out in the city where he was born and raised.
According to reports in Italy, Maldini's car collided with another vehicle at a junction, with six people in total, including the player, taken to hospital with injuries described as not serious. He was later discharged from hospital the same day.
Maldini tested positive for alcohol, recording readings of 0.91 and 0.89 milligrammes per litre in two roadside breath tests, above the legal limit, resulting in the suspension of his driving licence. Further toxicology results, including tests for drugs, are still awaited from the same examination carried out by local police.
The incident does not appear to have led to any serious or lasting injuries for those involved, though it comes at a sensitive moment for Cagliari, who currently sit fourth in Serie A on nine points from four matches, with three wins and only a single defeat so far this season under Fabio Pisacane.
Maldini, who turns 25 next month, has enjoyed a strong start to life at Cagliari after joining from Atalanta, quickly becoming a regular contributor in front of goal for Pisacane's side following a mixed run of previous seasons in his career.
He is due to report for training with the rest of the squad at the club's Assemini training centre on Sunday afternoon, ahead of Cagliari's final match before the international break away at Udinese next weekend.
