Jan Paul van Hecke has said he already has clarity over his future, but that any decision on a move away from Brighton will wait until after the World Cup.

The comments come with Tottenham Hotspur having seen two bids for the centre-back rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber confirmed last week that the Seagulls had turned down multiple approaches for the Dutch defender.

"There will always be a lot of interest in our best players, and especially when it comes to Jan Paul," Barber said.

He added that any departure would need to suit both club and player.

"Yes, we have rejected a bid from Tottenham over the last week or so, in fact two bids. Seen in that light, it has to be the right move for both us and the player."

Van Hecke, 26, is reported to be keen on a reunion with former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, who now manages Tottenham.

Brighton are understood to value Van Hecke at around £70m, with the defender entering the final year of his contract at the Amex Stadium.

A third bid from Tottenham is reportedly expected, with personal terms already understood to be in place.

Speaking to reporters as the Netherlands prepared for their World Cup opener against Japan, Van Hecke addressed the speculation for the first time.

"I have also said very clearly that I wanted clarity for myself before the World Cup," he said. "And I have that now. But for now it's just clear to myself. I just want to play the World Cup as well as possible."

He indicated that any public confirmation of his plans would have to wait.

"That clarity will probably come after the World Cup, when I make that step, then it's clear to everyone."

Van Hecke joined Brighton from NAC Breda in 2020 and has made more than 100 Premier League appearances for the club.

His representatives have already discussed personal terms with Tottenham, according to reports, with De Zerbi keen to bring in a defender he previously worked with on the south coast.

The situation has added complexity with Brighton's own interest in Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic, who is currently on loan at Hamburg.

Brighton have made a £30m bid for the Croatian, who is part of Tottenham's long-term defensive plans and has been valued by Spurs at more than double that figure.

For Van Hecke, the priority for now is the Netherlands' World Cup campaign, which begins against Japan.

Whatever the outcome of his future, it appears increasingly likely that this World Cup will be his last assignment in a Brighton shirt before any move to north London is finalised.
