Borussia Mönchengladbach prepare to strengthen in January

Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder says the club will consider January signings as they fight to recover from a disastrous start to their Bundesliga campaign.

Schröder has made clear that Gladbach will look for opportunities to improve the squad if reinforcements are needed to help secure their top-flight status.

“If we have the opportunity to make a move in the winter, we will strengthen as well,” Schröder told Sport1.

The sporting director said any decisions would depend on the club’s assessment of the team and its needs as the season progresses. Gladbach have endured a damaging opening to the campaign, with injuries and poor results leaving them under pressure to turn their fortunes around.

“If we believe we need to strengthen in the winter to achieve our goal, then we will do that. Borussia Monchengladbach belongs in the Bundesliga,” Schröder said.

The club’s immediate objective is to avoid being dragged further into the relegation battle. Their difficult start has placed new head coach Alexander Blessin under scrutiny, but Schröder has indicated that the club remain committed to supporting him.

He also confirmed that Blessin’s contract would remain valid if Gladbach were relegated to the second division.

Asked whether the agreement would cover a spell in the 2. Bundesliga, Schröder replied: “Yes, definitely.”

That assurance provides some clarity around the coach’s contractual position, although the priority remains finding a way to improve results and remain in the Bundesliga.

Gladbach’s recruitment strategy will depend partly on the progress of injured players and whether the current squad can respond to the challenge. Schröder has said the club hope the injury list will gradually shorten, giving Blessin a better opportunity to assess his options before decisions are made.

The sporting director has also called on the players to demonstrate their value and give the coach reasons to trust them. The club will then determine whether additions are necessary during the winter window.

“We are in the Bundesliga, and my position is clear: we have to do everything to stay in this league,” Schröder said in the Sport1 interview.

His comments leave the door open to January recruitment without guaranteeing that new players will arrive. Gladbach’s willingness to spend will depend on whether the club believe reinforcements are needed to meet their survival target.

For now, Schröder’s message is that the club will assess its options while continuing to back Blessin. The next phase of the season will determine how much work is required in the transfer market.
